What is a dual Autism and ADHD Assessment?
A dual autism and ADHD assessment is designed to diagnose both Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in an individual, typically a child, although it can also apply to adults. This comprehensive assessment aims to identify the presence of both conditions, which may share overlapping symptoms but also have distinct characteristics that require different types of support.
Why a dual assessment?
Research has shown that Autism and ADHD frequently co-occur. It is estimated that up to 50-70%* of individuals with autism also have symptoms of ADHD, and vice versa.
Autism and ADHD often coexist, meaning that many individuals exhibit symptoms of both conditions. However, because the attributes associated with autism and ADHD can appear similar (e.g. challenges with focus, impulsivity, social difficulties, or hyperactivity), a careful and thorough assessment is necessary to differentiate between them and ensure an accurate diagnosis.
A combined autism and ADHD assessment is an important step in accurately identifying both autism and ADHD in individuals who may present with overlapping symptoms and helps ensure that appropriate interventions are put in place to support the individual.
